It’s common nowadays to have a food waste disposal in your house. Food waste disposer is a very useful to grind up all your food waste. However, it can also be problematic when it comes to bad smell. Although it can crush all your food waste, it can’t get rid of the unpleasant odor. When you have this problem, Follow these few simple tips to save your day from bad odors.
Keep the water running. Remember to keep the cold water run before, when and afer the disposal works. This is the most basic solution. When the food waste disposal is working, let the water run so the tiny bits of the food can go down properly and no particles are left to breed any bacteria in your disposal. Remember to use cold water, so any fats (normally you shouldn’t put any fats in, such as meat or greasy stuff) will harden and can be flushed away.
Clean your garbage disposal splash guard. Use a kitchen sponge with hot and soapy water to wash the disposal splash guard thoroughly and also the inner parts of the disposal, which can help remove bacteria that results in bad odors.
Pour several drops of mint extract into your food waste disposal if you prefer the scent of mint for a fresher kitchen. Allow the mint extract to remain in the disposer for a few hours before rinsing it.
Put some ice cubes into the disposer and grind them up. Repeat this for a few times followed by cold water flush. Grinding ice cubes helps to dislodge food particles stuck on the inside of the food waste disposer. Run plenty of water to reduce the risk of odors developing in your garbage disposer. This will flush all food particles down the drain and prevent them from building up inside the disposal.
Freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and run those down the disposal. This will keep your blades sharp while safely killing odor-causing bacteria. For stubborn odors pour baking soda into the drain and let it set for several hours before running the water and garbage disposal.
Grind some citrus peels with ice cubes. It can freshen the smell in your house and help clean the disposer preventing bacteria from causing odor problem. Make sure the citrus peel such as orange, lemon or lime is in small pieces to ensure easy grinding. After that, rinse with cold water.
